Japanese Meiji Antique Lacquer Box Smoking Brazier Hibachi Landscape Tabaco bon Tobacco
Japanese Lacquer Smoking Set
This is a stunning small antique Japanese Meiji period, or late Edo smoking set sometimes called a 'Tabako-Bon'. Although it has some damage and is missing the original handle, It really is a masterpiece. The lacquer is museum-quality, and I don't think I've seen anything like it for sale for under 5k. The charming landscape scenes are incredibly detailed and were obviously made by a master, in both black and brown lacquer with gold highlights. The little knobs of the drawers are actually in the form of tiny ships, all incredibly sophisticated.
Condition: The lacquer is intact apart from a small closed retouched crack on the top right edge. There are a few small nicks and scratches—three minor little dings to the top of the front. Small loss to bottom join of the divider between the small drawers, There is a crack at the corner join top front right, which is typical for boxes made of such light thinly worked wood. The large hibachi brazier has a loose bottom, and the centre rim that holds it level is a little warped. The only missing component is the top handle, of which the two attachment points on either side top have been touched-up. Somebody hands could definitely make one out of a metal rod for you if desired. There are four small felt pads on the bottom for display.
Please feel free to ask. I have been doing some reading on this but Japanese lacquer is not my area of knowledge, I will do my best to answer any questions. I have done my best to list every minor detail and defect. But this really is an extraordinary item.
