About:
Raoul Dufy (French:1877 – 1953) was a French Fauvist painter, brother of Jean Dufy. He developed a colorful, decorative style that became fashionable for designs of ceramics and textiles, as well as decorative schemes for public buildings. He is noted for scenes of open-air social events. He was also a draftsman, printmaker, book illustrator, scenic designer, a designer of furniture, and a planner of public spaces.

Abduction of Persephone or Proserpina by Hades
This is a stunning Italian 18th, or later 19th century oil painting of a mythological scene by, after or circle of Batoni. Fantastic painting with very interesting mythological motifs. This painting requires further research. Very old engraved brass plate on bottom of the frame. 'Pompeo Batoni'. Difficult to photograph but we have done our best.
Provernance: Aristocratic collection, estate, Bavaria Germany. Engraved brass plate on bottom of the frame. 'Pompeo Batoni', no labels or notes on rear.
Condition: Canvas has been re-lined at some point due to a centre left vertical tear, this repair is old and the canvas is lifting off slightly. Not very noticeable unless strong light is coming from the side. Very small amount of tony chipping/flaking in a couple of places, but the paint layer is generally stable. Overall this painting could use a conservators clean and restoration but currently looks great as is. Victorian gilt composite frame is in great condition with a few minor chips and scratches.

Persephone slipped beneath the Earth and Hades stole her to the Underworld where he made her his wife."
In Greek mythology, Persephone, (also called Kore "the maiden"), is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. The story goes that the lovely young girl Persephone is gathering flowers in a field along with Artemis and Pallas, daughter of Triton. Hades, King of the Underworld, sees Persephone and falls in love with her. It is said that Zeus permits Hades to abduct her as her mother Demeter is unlikely to approve of such a union. Bursting through a cleft in the earth, Hades abducts her and carries her away to the Underworld.Demeter, learning that her daughter has disappeared, searches for her all over the earth. Unable to find Persephone, Demeter sinks into profound despair, causing her to neglect the earth so that nothing may grow. Helios, the sun, eventually tells Demeter what has happened and Zeus, pressed by the cries of the hungry people and by the other deities who also heard their anguish, forces Hades to return Persephone. Hades complies, but first, he tricks her by giving her some pomegranate seeds to eat.Persephone is released by Hermes, who has been sent to retrieve her, but because she has tasted food in the underworld, she is obliged to spend a third of each year (the winter months) there, and the remaining part of the year with the gods above. (With the later writers Ovid and Hyginus, Persephone's time in the underworld becomes half the year.) During her time in the Underworld, Persephone grows from a young girl to a wise woman, evolving into the role of Hecate, Queen of the Underworld, a formidable, venerable, majestic queen who carries into effect the curses of men upon the souls of the dead.
Artist:Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (1708 – 1787) was an Italian painter who displayed a solid technical knowledge in his portrait work and in his numerous allegorical and mythological pictures. The high number of foreign visitors travelling throughout Italy and reaching Rome during their "Grand Tour" led the artist to specialize in portraits. Batoni won international fame largely thanks to his customers, mostly British of noble origin, whom he portrayed, often with famous Italian landscapes in the background. Such Grand Tour portraits by Batoni were in British private collections, thus ensuring the genre's popularity in Great Britain. One generation later, Sir Joshua Reynolds would take up this tradition and become the leading English portrait painter. Although Batoni was considered the best Italian painter of his time, contemporary chronicles mention his rivalry with Anton Raphael Mengs.In addition to art-loving nobility, Batoni's subjects included the kings and queens of Poland, Portugal and Prussia, the Holy Roman Emperors Joseph II and Leopold II (a fact which earned him noble dignity), as well the popes Benedict XIV, Clement XIII and Pius VI, Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria, and many more. He also received numerous orders for altarpieces for churches in Italy (Rome, Brescia, Lucca, Parma, etc.), as well as for mythological and allegorical subjects. Batoni's style took inspiration and incorporated elements of classical antiquity, French Rococo, Bolognese classicism, and the work of artists such as Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, and especially Raphael. As such Pompeo Batoni is considered a precursor of Neoclassicism.

About: Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (12 July 1884 – 24 January 1920) was an Italian Jewish painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He is known for portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by a surreal elongation of faces, necks, and figures that were not received well during his lifetime, but later became much sought-after. Modigliani spent his youth in Italy, where he studied the art of antiquity and the Renaissance. In 1906, he moved to Paris, where he came into contact with such artists as Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncuși. By 1912 Modigliani was exhibiting highly stylized sculptures with Cubists of the Section d'Or group at the Salon d'Automne.
Modigliani's oeuvre includes paintings and drawings. From 1909 to 1914, he devoted himself mainly to sculpture. His main subject was portraits and full figures, both in the images and in the sculptures. Modigliani had little success while alive, but after his death achieved great popularity. He died of tubercular meningitis, at the age of 35, in Paris.

Francois Claver's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from $291 USD to $1,063 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 2012 the record price for this artist at auction is $1,063 USD for Le Moulin Rouge, Paris, sold at Hindman, Chicago in 2012. The artist died in the Circa 1961.

Condition: Beautiful satin patina, could be oiled or waxed if you prefer more shine, I have only cleaned with a damp cloth. Small closed crack at one breast, base - see the image.

The Adoration Of The The Golden Calf after Nicolas Poussin.

This rare and powerful 18th century engraving with a biblical subject is executed after an original by the great French Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665 ). Now in the National Gallery, London. (see last image) Reversed a per usual. for early engravings.
The inspiration is the book of Exodus, chapter 32 (KJV), verse 19. Moses has come down from Sinai with the tablets of the Law in his hands (portrayed in this image, upper right). He discovers the Jews turned to idolatry, dancing before a golden calf:"19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf,and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount."
Artist:
The name of Poussin is to be found lower left. To the right, we read, "Finished by Surugue". This is Louis Surugue de Surgis (1686-1762), an eminent engraver of the day, listed in the Bénézit and other standard reference works.
Condition:
Damage and wear are consistent with age. Numerous small stains, three corners have been repaired, one crease top left. See pictures.

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796 – 1875) was a French landscape and portrait painter as well as a printmaker in etching. He is a pivotal figure in landscape painting and his vast output simultaneously references the Neo-Classical tradition and anticipates the plein-air innovations of Impressionism. He was also a tireless traveller and, throughout his travels, he made numerous oil painting drafts in which he captured the immediacy of light and atmosphere, while still working on his studio paintings.
